An earthquake with a magnitude of 8,0 (magnitude revised by the USGS) struck off the coast of Peru on August 15 at 18:40 local time. The epicenter was located in the sea approximately 60km from the city of Pisco. The quake caused the interruption of both power and telephone services, which are gradually being reestablished, within Peru and in the capital city of Lima . There have been reports of hundreds of collapsed homes in the cities of Pisco, Cañete, and Chincha. Several health facilities in the department of Ica, including hospitals in Pisco and Chincha, have suffered physical damage and are operating on a limited basis. According to the Civil Defense the death toll stands at 337 with more than 1,000 injured from the quake. These numbers are expected to rise as search and rescue continues in a number of cities. Structural damage and needs are being assessed. The Peruvian government has declared a state of emergency in order to mobilize personnel and supplies to the affected zones.

Actions:

  • The PAHO/WHO Representation in Peru is meeting with the UN Emergency Team and the Vice Minister of Health to assess priority relief needs.
  • Pre-hospital care units have been deployed to the affected zone, including Ica, in order to assist with the rescue effort and to attend to those injured and transport them to health facilities.
  • Peru’s Minister of Health has deployed to Chincha and Ica, with a health team composed of 50 doctors, 30 nurses, 20 ambulances, a mobile Operations Center and medical supplies.
  • President Alan Garcia decided that all hospitals of the Ministry of Health, Armed Forces and Social Security system provide care at no cost to patients.

Un terremoto de magnitud 8.0 (magnitud revisada por el Servicio Geológico de los Estados Unidos) sacudió la costa del Perú el 15 de agosto, a las 18:40 hora local. El epicentro se ubicó a aproximadamente 60km de la ciudad de Pisco. El sismo causó el corte de servicios de teléfono y de electricidad, que están siendo gradualmente restablecidos, en varias ciudades, además de la capital, Lima. Hay reportes de derrumbes de viviendas en Pisco, Cañete y Chincha. Varios establecimientos de salud en el departamento de Ica, incluyendo hospitales en Pisco y Chincha, han sufrido daños físicos y están funcionando parcialmente. De acuerdo a la Defensa Civil hay 337 muertos y más de mil heridos a causa del sismo. Se espera que estas cantidades se incrementen a medida que continúen las actividades de búsqueda y rescate en las ciudades afectadas. El gobierno declaró estado de emergencia para movilizar recursos humanos y materiales a los zonas afectadas.

Acciones:

  • La Oficina de la OPS/OMS en el Perú se ha reunido con un equipo de emergencia de ONU y el Viceministro de Salud para evaluar las necesidades de socorro prioritarias.
  • Unidades de atención pre-hospitalaria han sido movilizados a la zona sobre todo de Ica para realizar las labores de rescate y atención de heridos y transporte a las unidades de salud.
  • El Ministro de Salud se ha trasladado a las ciudades de Chincha e Ica con un equipo médico, compuesto de 50 médicos, 30 enfermeras, 20 ambulancias, un centro de operaciones móvil, medicamentos e insumos.
  • El Presidente de la Nación, Alan García, ha decidido que todos los hospitales del ministerio de salud, de las fuerzas armadas y del Seguro Social brindarán servicios sin costo para los pacientes.
